Husbands Can't be Heroes (July 20, 2011. Issue 29.)

When the car runs out of gas and there is an extra tank
in the garage and the boots are tied and walking,
you scream and holler
because it was a rough day.
After dinner the laundry and house cleaned,
and then he steps into the kitchen to scrub
the risotto stuck to the pans.
It's just him cleaning up after himself
he's a big boy after all,
so what if he had a list of chores to do?
One more won't hurt anything.
At night,
as he lays worried about how to keep in touch,
after weeks of sexless love,
flowers,
poorly written poems and true love in his heart
he wishes things were new,
like they used to be before he committed his heart to her.
Back when they made love into the morning
against sinks and tables,
kissed and shared everything.
Now he lays alone,
sharing nothing of his soul
because he has given it all away in the tireless
efforts to keep love alive.
